RiverStage is not just a stage beside the Ohio; it is a stage on the Ohio. Jeffersonville bought the old floating venue in 2003 and converted it into a performance barge, largely because a permanent riverfront stage would have been much more vulnerable to flooding. The terraced lawn behind it had been built a few years earlier on a riverbank once lined with deteriorating boat docks. Together they turned an awkward flood-prone edge of downtown into an outdoor amphitheater where the stage itself can rise, fall, or be moved when the river insists on participating.
