Rowan St Pump Station
About this tag
By day, this looks like exactly what it is: infrastructure. At night, one side of the Rowan Street Pump Station suddenly becomes something else. The upper façade is made from perforated aluminum panels designed to glow with multicolored light, an intentional bit of showmanship for a building that would otherwise have been a plain utility box. It is also the visible tip of something enormous: the four-mile Waterway Protection Tunnel runs beneath Louisville from here, storing stormwater and wastewater during heavy rain. A surprisingly theatrical wrapper for a very serious piece of sewer infrastructure.
