Old Quinn Chapel
About this tag
Those boarded arches belong to Quinn Chapel AME, a building with a lot more history behind them than the condition suggested. The church was built in 1884 and became Quinn Chapel in 1910, but the congregation itself dates to 1838 and was once known as Louisville’s “Abolitionists’ Church.” Martin Luther King Jr. spoke here in 1961, and in 1967 the chapel became a starting point for nightly marches demanding open housing. Preservation and stabilization work on the old building is still ongoing.
