This crosswalk was part of Louisville’s 2023 Community Crosswalks pilot, which turned several downtown intersections into pieces of asphalt art intended to make pedestrian crossings harder for drivers to ignore. The city treated the street itself as both canvas and safety equipment, borrowing an idea that had shown promising crash reductions elsewhere. It is public art in one of its least precious forms: designed to be walked across, driven over, weathered, repainted, and noticed mostly because you were already trying to get to the other side.
