York Statue
About this tag
Ed Hamilton’s bronze York has stood on the Belvedere since 2003. York was enslaved by William Clark and traveled with the Corps of Discovery as a hunter, caregiver, scout, and laborer. When the expedition ended, the other members received double pay and 320 acres of land. York received neither and returned to slavery, with Clark initially refusing his requests for freedom. The Louisville connection runs deeper too. York spent part of his life at the Clark family’s Mulberry Hill property here in town.
