Someone had written “DOPE” on this wall, then somebody apparently tried to clean it off. The result was better than the original graffiti. Instead of disappearing, the word was left behind as a big pale ghost that somehow made it even more obvious. There’s actually a term for this in graffiti removal: ghosting. The attempted cleanup became the clue.
