Louisville Cemetery Crypt
About this tag
This squat concrete structure carries a stone sign for the Louisville Cemetery Association, founded in 1886 to establish and operate this historically Black cemetery. Beside the locked gate is a considerably less solemn detail: a warning that whatever is behind it is flammable. The building’s exact function is not well documented, and the 1917 date carved into its stone remains unexplained. So it sits in the middle of the cemetery as part administrative relic, part utility building, part extremely poor place to investigate with a match.
