That strange face on the Main Library isn’t a random addition. Louisville Metro describes the old Carnegie building as decorated with grotesque bronze masks, part of the ornament that came with the 1908 Beaux-Arts design. There’s even a close cousin inside. Theodore Wilberg’s original Art, History and Science mural includes another grotesque mask at the base of a classical figure. Apparently the library decided books alone weren’t enough and needed a few weird little faces watching the doors.
