Louisville Compost Co-Op
About this tag
This little compost operation grew out of a pile of discarded UofL dumpsters. In 2009, philosophy instructor Brian Barnes realized the old containers could be repurposed into compost bins, and volunteers started processing campus food waste here the following year with little more than pitchforks and human labor. The project eventually spun off Louisville Compost Co-op in 2017, adding weekly bucket pickup for homes and businesses around the city. The original Bloom Street compost site is still operating too.
