George Rogers Clark Homesite
About this tag
The lonely chimney is the survivor of a reconstruction, not George Rogers Clark’s original cabin. Clark really did live on this bluff in the early 1800s, but his house disappeared in the nineteenth century; an 1830s log cabin was moved here in 2001 to represent it. That replacement was destroyed by arson in 2021, leaving the chimney behind. So the site now has an odd double layer of absence: the historic house is long gone, and even the building that stood in for it has vanished. What remains is one brick reminder of two different lost cabins.
