Memorial Park Artwork
About this tag
The art worked into these walls has more of a story than it first lets on. In the 1990s, Spalding University art students set out to revive this little, underused park through public art. The wall piece, called Strata, was designed as a kind of cutaway view of the earth, with objects and handmade tiles embedded through it. Better yet, much of it was literally community-made: hundreds of nearby residents, students, and young people helped create pieces for the walls. What looks at first like a wonderfully strange accumulation of objects is also a record of people trying to make an overlooked park worth stopping in.
