About this tag
Those red pipes sit in a surprisingly deliberate bit of downtown. When the Yum Center opened in 2010, the area beneath the Second Street Bridge got a $3 million makeover intended to create an “urban living room.” Landscape architects CARMAN filled the 2nd and Washington area with playful seating, planters, custom street furniture, and references to Whiskey Row history, while a new lighting scheme turned the bridge into the room’s ceiling. The lighting even picked up a national design citation in 2011. What exactly the red pipes are, though, remains wonderfully unclear.
