Colgate Entrance
About this tag
This tag skipped Clarksville’s obvious Colgate landmark, the giant clock, for one of the old plant’s quieter entrances. The complex started life as Indiana State Prison South in 1847 before Colgate bought it and converted it into a factory. The famous clock arrived from Colgate’s Jersey City plant in 1924, and its octagonal shape was inspired by Octagon Soap. Later additions included work by industrial-architecture giant Albert Kahn’s firm. Colgate closed the plant in 2008, and the long-vacant complex is now the subject of a massive redevelopment plan called Clockworks.
