Louisville Crematory & Columbarium
About this tag
This was the old crematory and columbarium at the back of Eastern Cemetery, built in 1957 to replace Kentucky’s first crematorium elsewhere on the property. After Eastern was effectively abandoned following the 1989 grave-reuse scandal, the building became a magnet for break-ins and vandalism. By 2007, people were even lighting fires in the old cremator furnace. The doors and windows were eventually bricked up to keep people out, which explains the unusually sealed-off building that remains there today.
