Wheelmens Bench
About this tag
“Wheelmen’s Bench” felt like an appropriately named stop for a bicycle game. Turns out it is considerably more on-the-nose than that. The bench and fountain were erected in 1897 by Kentucky’s League of American Wheelmen to honor a pioneering cyclist, right beside a new bicycle path on Southern Parkway. That same year, an estimated 10,000 cyclists paraded past Wayside Park in a citywide Cycle Carnival. More than a century later, Louisville riders were still using the bench as a meeting point. Bike Tag did not stumble onto a cycling reference here; it stumbled onto an old piece of Louisville cycling infrastructure and culture.
