Muhammad Ali Boxing Glove Monument
About this tag
These giant gloves are officially the Smoketown Unity Monument, created by Ed Hamilton and Zephra May Miller in 1991. They honor the neighborhood’s boxing history, including Muhammad Ali and Jimmy Ellis, who trained nearby. The best detail is that the heart shape in the middle apparently became obvious during a community meeting, when a kid looked at the model and pointed out what the overlapping gloves made. The sculpture later spent a few years in storage during Sheppard Square construction before returning to Smoketown in 2016.
