Chickasaw Spraypad
About this tag
The obelisk is part of what Louisville Parks calls a “traditional spraypad,” a converted wading pool with a single structure that sprays water. There’s some history behind the setting too. The Olmsted Brothers’ 1923 plan for Chickasaw Park included a wading pool, though it’s unclear whether today’s spraypad occupies the same one. Chickasaw was designed during segregation for Louisville’s Black community and is believed to be the only Olmsted-firm municipal park created specifically for African Americans. A major restoration now planned for the park includes improvements to the sprayground.
