River Horse (3rd times a charm)
About this tag
Third visit, so here’s another piece of the River Horse story. Mary Caperton Bingham privately commissioned the sculpture from Barney Bright and gave it to the city. Bright started with a small sketch, then scaled it into the roughly 21-foot bronze fountain. His retrospective says he was working in the tradition of the monumental horse fountains found in European capitals. Louisville’s version just happened to come with wings and a fish tail.
