The Thinker
About this tag
This always looked like the sort of campus sculpture that must be a replica. It isn’t. Louisville’s Thinker is the first large-scale bronze casting of Rodin’s famous figure, personally supervised by the artist and completed in 1904. It went to the St. Louis World’s Fair, spent years in Baltimore, and finally landed in front of Grawemeyer Hall in 1949. There are many Thinkers in the world, but this one has a surprisingly good claim to being the first big bronze of them all.
