The COLUMBIA TRUST CO. lettering on the LongTail Building is a restored ghost sign with a surprisingly good paper trail. A 1909 photo shows this corner occupied by G. A. Brucker Groceries, while the wall advertised savings accounts at Columbia Trust’s Fourth and Main office. LongTail’s renovation brought the old signs back from archival photos, with one modern addition to the bank ad: “A safer bet than your shoe,” a wink at the building’s later life as the Whirlaway tavern.
