Progression
About this tag
What looked like a new piece at the Speed Art Museum really was a new arrival outdoors—but the artwork itself has a much longer history. Progression (Chicago) is a 1997 concrete-block work by Sol LeWitt, formerly part of Mary and Al Shands’s remarkable contemporary-art collection at Great Meadows in Crestwood. Their bequest supplied sculptures that helped form the backbone of the Speed’s new Cressman Art Park, which opened in 2025. So this tag caught a small moment of transition: a decades-old artwork, collected locally for years, beginning a very public second life beside the University of Louisville.
