The “portal” is on the top level of New Albany’s State Street Parking Garage, built from a city redevelopment project begun in the 1990s. The more useful clue was the white steeple in the distance. That’s the Town Clock Church, whose steeple has been helping people orient themselves for much longer than Bike Tag. Riverboat pilots once used it as a landmark from the Ohio, and the church’s abolitionist congregation helped freedom seekers crossing into Indiana on the Underground Railroad.
