Grotto of Our Lady Lourdes
About this tag
This little grotto is a survivor from St. Joseph Infirmary, which once occupied the surrounding property. It was dedicated in 1927 and designed by D. X. Murphy & Bros., the same Louisville architectural lineage behind the Churchill Downs grandstand and Twin Spires. The hospital itself was demolished in 1980, but the grotto stayed put. Its garden originally held 14 mosaic Stations of the Cross, later replaced with painted versions, and the site became a Kentucky landmark in 2001.
