The Garden of Angels began with Marc Hampton, whose three teenage sons, Jemar, Demar and Marc Claybrooks, died alongside their friend Aaron Shields in a 2008 car crash. Hampton drew the idea for the memorial, with four figures holding up a globe, and it was unveiled on Christmas Day 2011. He wanted other families who had lost children to have somewhere peaceful to remember them too. Hampton also chose to forgive the teenage driver and later met with him, hoping to help him move forward.
