Parkland Rising was created in 2013 after a triple homicide shook the neighborhood. Artist Ramona Dallum Lindsey worked with hundreds of residents and local kids to transform an abandoned apartment building, using discarded bottles and clothing to build the phoenix. Residents added their own hopes for Parkland’s future beneath the message “We Will Rise Together.” The project later became part of a local debate over whether public money should go toward neighborhood art or more immediate housing needs.
