Portland Wharf Park
About this tag
This stretch of the Louisville Loop has never felt especially civilized. Flooding, mud, erosion, and rough trail conditions can turn what looks like a straightforward riverfront ride into something much more improvisational; the city has even routed the Loop around this area because of recurring flood and bank-erosion problems. The irony is that Portland Wharf was once one of Louisville’s busiest transportation landscapes, crowded with river traffic and commerce below the Falls. Now getting through it by bicycle can feel oddly adventurous. Bike Tag caught the place at its scruffiest: abandoned cars, barely rideable paths, and a historic riverfront that seemed determined to make you work for it.
