The little green gas pump out front is what always caught my eye, but the firehouse behind it has been here since 1908. It originally belonged to Engine Company 21; an old photograph even shows a trolley rolling past it on Frankfort Avenue. Engine 4 came later, taking over the station decades into the building’s life. I still haven’t found a trustworthy explanation for the pump itself, which somehow makes it better: a small green mystery parked in front of more than a century of Louisville firehouse history.
