Gallopalooza started in 2004 after John Conti saw Chicago’s decorated cow statues and decided Louisville needed its own version, naturally with horses. That first “Sidewalk Derby” put 223 fiberglass horses around town, and many were later sold into private ownership, which is why old ones still turn up in unexpected places. The timing of this tag was pretty good too. Gallopalooza had just returned for its 20th anniversary and Derby 150, putting a fresh batch of horses around Louisville in 2024. This particular red horse’s artist and original year remain elusive.
