About this tag

The name has a story of its own. Mary Baker Eddy originally wanted “Church of Christ,” but that name was already taken in Massachusetts, so “Scientist” was added as a denominational identifier. Louisville’s congregation grew large enough that by 1915 it was temporarily renting a 1,500-seat hall while planning this church at Third and Ormsby. Construction began in 1916, with plans for roughly 1,400 seats and a projected cost around $200,000. A 1928 photograph shows the finished Neoclassical building, including decorative ironwork likely made by Louisville’s Logan Company.
