Beargrass Creek FPS
About this tag
This steampunk-looking fortress is actually one of Louisville’s main flood defenses. In normal weather, Beargrass Creek runs straight through it and paddlers can pass beneath. When the Ohio rises, gates close across the creek and a bank of huge pumps starts lifting Beargrass water over the barrier and into the river. The station dates to the early 1950s, and some of its original equipment is still in service. It looks like a place you should need a boat and a secret password to enter, which isn’t entirely wrong.
