Portland Cemetery
About this tag
The stone gate is on the north side of Portland Cemetery, one of Louisville’s older public burial grounds. The city dates its formal start to an 1847 land deed, but there’s a grave marker here from 1828, so people were being buried on the site well before that. Many early Portland families are buried inside, including French families tied to the old river town.
