Race Riot of 1968
About this tag
This is where the 1968 Parkland uprising began. On May 27, hundreds gathered at 28th and Greenwood to protest police brutality and the reinstatement of an officer accused of beating Black realtor Manfred Reid. The rally was peaceful before violence broke out and spread through West Louisville. Two young Black men were killed and 472 people were arrested. Six Black Louisvillians were later accused of conspiring to cause the unrest. Those charges collapsed for lack of evidence, and in 2022 the city formally apologized to the group now known as the Black Six.
