Baxter Station
About this tag
Baxter Station was once an Art Deco L&N passenger stop perched on the elevated railroad above Beargrass Creek. It opened in late 1937 as part of a WPA project that lifted the tracks over several busy streets. During the Great Flood that same year, people crossed nearby floodwater on a temporary pontoon bridge made from old distillery barrels to reach higher ground in Irish Hill. The station building survived long after passenger service faded, but it was demolished in 2009.
